WHOIS Information & ID protection (Domain privacy)

When you register a domain name, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires domain registrars to collect and maintain certain contact information for the domain owner. This information is made publicly available through the Whois database(www.whois.com), which allows anyone to look up domain ownership details.

The Whois information includes:

  1. Registrant (Owner) Name: The legal name of the domain owner.
  2. Registrant Contact Information: Email address, phone number, and postal address of the domain owner.
  3. Administrative Contact: Details of the person or organization responsible for managing the domain's administrative matters.
  4. Technical Contact: Information about the technical contact responsible for managing the domain's technical aspects.
  5. Registrar: The name of the domain registrar through which the domain was registered.
  6. Domain Creation and Expiry Dates: Dates when the domain was created and will expire.
  7. Name Servers: The authoritative servers responsible for hosting the DNS records of the domain.

ID Protection (Privacy) Policies:

To protect the privacy and security of domain owners, many registrars offer a service called ID Protection (also known as Privacy Protection or Whois Privacy). This service replaces the public Whois contact information with generic contact details provided by the registrar, shielding the domain owner's personal information from public view.

Key points regarding ID Protection:

1. Anonymized Contact Information: ID Protection replaces the domain owner's personal contact information in the public Whois database with generic contact details provided by the registrar or third-party privacy service

2. Domain Transfer and Management: ID Protection does not hinder your ability to transfer or manage your domain. You can still exercise complete control over your domain, such as updating DNS settings or transferring it to another registrar.

3. Limitations: Some country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) may have specific regulations or restrictions regarding ID Protection e.g .US and .NG extensions do not support ID protection, and all registrant information must be made public.

You will be unable to add ID Protection to your domain registration order with HostNowNow if the extension does not support it, but if you are looking to purchase ID protection separately, we recommend checking in with us first so we can confirm if the specific TLD you wish to use it on supports it.
